Pros: I bought this in hopes that it would be a lot quieter than the 1200w PSUs that come with the 836 case. It is much quieter. The server probably is not much louder than a gaming tower now. I only have 1 PSU plugged in right now, I will order a second and report back if that makes a noticeable difference.
Cons: None.
Overall Review: I have 21 drives in my system now and it is only using 215 watts (as reported by the UPS), so the power rating isn’t a concern.
If you combine this with the quiet case fans (FAN-0104L4) the noise level is much more palatable.
Pros: Quiet (compared with other supermicro PSUs)
Very effecient (92-94%)
Cheap (for a 920w super high effecient specialized rackmount chasis its pretty cheap)
Cons: I guess it could be a little quieter and cheaper but its already pretty good =)
Overall Review: I had a supermicro SC846 (24 disk) chassis which was very loud due to the PSU. I setup the BIOS for economical for the chasis fans and those are quiet enough for me but the darn PSU fans were 3x louder. I tried the normal 900w ones which were *very* loud and then went to the 720w which under light loads or until it had been running for a while was very quiet. The 720w model was either very quiet or very loud. I was running dual 720w to help lesson the load on each which helped it stay in the ‘quiet’ level more often.
I upgraded to this 920w model which is much higher effeciency. I saw a 60w decrease in power usage from the dual 720w PSU model (half of decrease is probably due to the extra power being used in a dual PSU configuration).
This new PSU has more ramp up options and even at high load it is LOADs quieter than the 700w ones were during heavy load and MUCH MUCH quiter than the 900w ones were even when you first turn them on.
This is a great PSU.
